Summary: Who were they to arrogantly think that they could control their own destinies?
A/n: This is a strange au. This was the fourth fic I wrote during Thanksgiving Vacation.
-.-.-
Sometimes, having the Owner of the Sphere Company as your lover was a little disconcerting. It wasn’t the way he handled his projects-- as though they were highly precious pets, rather than potential, actual beings, though sometimes that was disturbing too, in its own right-- but the way he conversed with Fayt and explained everything as though he knew it all.
He was arrogant that way, assuming and thinking that everything could be analyzed and such. While that may be true and Fayt didn’t mind him going on and on about his latest project --and that the reason why so-and-so project wasn’t progressing was not because of him and his lack of sleep affecting his work ethic, but because of his incompetent workers when the workers themselves weren’t truly at fault--Fayt, to his own shock, actually found him boring.
No.
Boring wasn’t the right word.
He just found himself a little disturbed by how Luther behaved and talked as though he could unravel all the mysteries of all the universes. It was like trying to read a well-written novel and having an English teacher tell the students to write an essay on it, prompting the students to break down the meanings of the novel until the students themselves could no longer appreciate the novel for the value of entertainment.
Fayt had to admit that in the very beginning, he had been so fascinated by Luther Lansfeld. He was a true genius and Fayt, who happened to be considered a “genius” in his own family of scientists as well, was drawn to him. It wasn’t a surprise that they have gotten along so well and shared many common interests like computers and even gaming. It wasn’t even a surprise that they became a couple.
Maybe the phase of romantic love was already fading. He had learned that once you lived with someone long enough, all the pretenses would vanish and all of their true colors would finally be shown, but Fayt thought that he could deal with that. He had accepted Luther as he was and he wouldn’t force him to change because it wasn’t right.
But why was he disconcerted? Was it because he knew that not everything could be fully explained? That some things just happened? And that there were some things that they, the 4D beings, could not control? Who were they to arrogantly think that they could control their own destinies? They weren’t gods, but maybe Luther was.
And then it finally clicked.
-.-.-
They stood by the shore of the beach. The ebbing waves tickled his toes. Fayt glanced at his lover with a smile and Luther arched an eyebrow. Luther was probably wondering what was so funny. If nothing else, they both wore matching trunks of black.
“What are you going to do about that one project of yours, the Eternal Sphere?” Fayt inquired curiously. He had been wrong before-- the way Luther had handled that particular project was what truly disturbed him. He could remember the times when Luther had explained to him that what he created and the 4D beings were simply not equal because the 3D beings merely imitated their own lives.
“My older sister has been asking me about that as well,” Luther said softly and to those who didn’t know Luther well enough, he seemed to be polite, but his facial expressions did not match it. He wasn’t frowning, but he wasn’t smiling either; his mouth was simply a thin line. “And I stand by my decision. They are nothing more than zeros and ones.”
Fayt let out a deep sigh. “So you think that they are really just artificial.”
“Yes,” Luther said with his own little smirk now. “I see that you’re finally understanding my point.”
Fayt rolled his eyes. “Don’t insult me.” He turned around and gingerly placed his hands on Luther’s face. “But I want to try something. Will you let me?”
Luther chuckled. “Fayt, no matter what you do, you are never going to change my mind. I am not easily persuaded unlike those other so-called intellectuals who will believe anything despite that the faultiness of the evidence…”
And he’s ranting off again.
Fayt let out another sigh and shook his head. Then, he tilted his partner’s head to the side and kissed him. It was so simple, the mere touch of lips, but Luther deepened it as he bit Fayt’s bottom lip demandingly. Fayt moaned and yielded, his hands falling to Luther’s thighs. Luther wrapped one arm around his waist and pulled him closer while his other hand clasped Fayt’s own.
Because he needed to breathe, Fayt broke the kiss and smiled at Luther again. “Sometimes you talk too much.”
“As if I’ll ever talk to others who will never understand,” Luther muttered, sounding actually hurt. Fayt winced. He didn’t mean it like that.
“No, what I mean is that…well, I’ll give you an example. I just kissed you, right? But where did it come from? Why do people kiss? Why is it romantic? How did the concept of kisses came about?” Fayt asked, hoping that Luther wouldn’t take this the wrong way. “Like, if you really think about it, kissing is gross.”
Luther gazed at him with a little frown. “I suppose, one could say that a kiss cannot be explained biologically. If nothing else, it is psychological. Culture tells us that a kiss is supposed to feel good, that it means something.”
“It is a social construct. It can be artificial too, you know,” Fayt said with a victorious grin. “It’s like taking a placebo pill, believing that it will make you feel better just because you want to get better and you really just… well, believe.”
“So if I believe that these 3D beings are just as real as us and can feel like us because I created them to be like us, then they are truly real?” Luther questioned, giving Fayt a stern look and crossing his arms. “Is that what you’re trying to point out? Because that can easily be refuted. You really should think things through before-- “
“I know it can be refuted,” Fayt said stubbornly, cutting him off, “but that doesn’t matter. I just want you to think about what you created. There’s a reason why you’re called the Owner and the Creator by the everyone here. You didn’t give yourself your own title. You earned it by working hard for it.”
“Hmm.” Luther was smiling at him. He held onto Fayt tighter and kissed him again. “If it matters to you that badly, maybe we should conduct a little experiment. How would you like to live within the 3D universe? You’ll study them and gather information and if your research supports your little hypothesis, that if I created them to be like us, then they are real just as us, then I will concede.”
“Yeah, I can do that,” Fayt said with a joyful laugh. Finally, a chance to prove Luther wrong! “But what’s the catch?” Because he knew that nothing in any world was completely free. To be in Luther’s company, Fayt had to tolerate the way Luther behaved. To be friends with him, Fayt had to give up all that was himself to him because Luther had no one else to accept him for the way he was, to love him for the way he was.
And they both knew it.
Luther was still smiling, his eyes a deeper shade of blue. He placed a finger on Fayt’s chin and began stroking his cheek. “I do not want you to completely immerse yourself there. I want you to keep your distance…”
Fayt knew why all too well.
“…Because you’re mine,” Luther whispered and once more, they kissed. It was of passion, lust and strangely enough, trust.
“I’m yours,” Fayt said softly. “Always.”
Little did Fayt know of the obstacles that lay ahead.
Fin.
